8 March 2017, Geneva

Thank you, Madame Chair.

I would like to welcome Mr. Tomochika UYAMA, Deputy Director-General of Economic Affairs Bureau and his distinguished delegation from Tokyo to Geneva on the occasion of the 13th trade policy review and to thank the discussant, Ambassador Braithwaite for his valuable remarks.

Japan is one of the leading economies across the globe with significant impact on overall economic performance, and has a vital importance in relation to the smooth functioning of the multilateral trading system.

In light of the depressed economic activities in recent years, caused by persistent low inflation alongside with natural disasters and other economic decelerations, Japan’s economic performance has been improving with the slower than usual GDP growth.

In this context, Japan launched a strategy to revitalize country’s economy, which was primarily focused on the implementation of bold monetary policy, flexible fiscal policy and introduction of structural reforms. Aforesaid is envisaged to be a guarantee for the increased economy and consequent GDP growth by improving business climate, promoting SMEs, enhancing country’s integration into the world economy through trade agreements.

I am delighted to stress that since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Georgia and Japan in 1992, close cooperation in bilateral and multilateral formats have been dynamically developing in many areas.

With the support from the Government of Japan, multiple technical assistance programs have been implemented in Georgia within the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) framework. They are aimed at the rehabilitation and development of the economically vital areas and I would like to reiterate sincere gratitude for the continuous support.

It is important to note, that despite the geographical distance, there is an active cooperation in trade, however, it has to be stressed that bilateral trade data between our states does not reflect the real potential we have in this direction. I believe that export and import dynamics will be significantly improved in the coming years.

In addition, I would like to highlight that, although, overall trade turnover between the two countries decreased as compared to last year, there are some positive export tendencies reflected in increase of exports of such products as wine, ferroalloys, crude aluminum and others.

In conclusion, I wish Japan the successful and productive review.

Thank you, Madame Chair.
