Mr. President,

We are concerned about the continued deteriorated human rights situation in different parts of the world.

Georgia remains deeply concerned with the ongoing conflict in Syria that has led to enormous suffering of the Syrian people. We condemn deliberate targeting of civilians and aid convoys and my delegation believes that perpetrators of these serious crimes should be hold accountable. In this context, Georgia welcomes and supports the establishment of the International, Impartial and Independent Mechanism to assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic since March 2011, in accordance with General Assembly resolution 71/248.

Georgia is concerned with the ongoing human rights situation in South Sudan. In particular, we are alarmed by the reports of ethnic cleansing and indications of genocide. Georgia underscores the importance of free access of the United Nations and humanitarian agencies to vulnerable populations and urges concerned parties to remove restrictions to this end.

We remain intensely alarmed by the humanitarian and human rights situation in Eastern Ukraine and occupied Crimea and stress the utmost importance of unimpeded access of the OHCHR and other international organizations to the whole territory of Ukraine.

Distinguished Colleagues,

Let me draw your attention to the deteriorating human rights situation in the occupied Georgia regions. Local residents are deprived of their basic rights on daily basis. In this context, let me recall recent closure of the so called crossing points along the occupation line in Abkhazia region, which already further restricted freedom of movement of the local population and aggravated difficult humanitarian situation in the region, especially for vulnerable groups like elders, children and persons in need of medical care.

Distinguished Colleagues,

This development is taking place in absence of international monitoring and continuous denial of access to the UN human rights machinery to these regions by regimes in control

We, therefore, urge the High Commissioner and the Council to keep focus on the human rights situation therein.

Thank you.
