Geneva, 8 June 2017

I would like to thank the distinguished panelists for their presentations.

Let me highlight some developments that took place in Georgia.

Georgia fully acknowledges the importance of increasing capacity-building in public health and carries out complex measures to guarantee universal and equal access to health services.

The Government launched the Universal Health Care Program that led to the state-funded health care coverage for all citizens and resulted in dramatic increase of utilization of the primary care services. In 2015, the Government has started an unprecedented Hepatitis C elimination program.

Recently, the first ever Georgian National Strategy (2017–2030) and the three-year Action Plan for Safe Motherhood and Newborn Care, Reproductive Health and Adolescent was launched, providing stronger government ownership and support to achieve highest attainable standard of health for all women, children and adolescents.

In our view, sustainable development largely depends on realizing the right to health. Therefore, the Government has nationalized Sustainable Development Goals, with 14 prioritized goals and 88 targets, including SDG 3, aiming to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages.

Distinguished delegates,

When it comes to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it is important to underline major challenges we face today. Sustainable development goals cannot be equally applicable to everyone, in particular, to the people living in the conflict affected areas. People living in the occupied regions of Georgia are denied free access to medical care, as barbwire fences and other artificial barriers along the occupation line pose serious obstacles to their freedom of movement. In number of cases, heavy restrictions imposed in the occupied regions lead to casualties.  International community, including the HRC, should pay particular attention to this problem.

I thank you.
