Thank you, Chair.

Georgia welcomes the delegation of Iceland, headed by H.E. Director General Ms. Rammette, on the occasion of its fifth trade policy review.

At the outset, I would like to express appreciation to the Government of Iceland and the Secretariat for their work in compiling the comprehensive report on trade policy developments over the course of the review period. My words of compliments also go to the Discussant Ambassador Cedeno Molinari of Costa Rica for his introductory remarks.

With a small open economy and limited range of natural resources, trade is critically important to Iceland's economy. Exports and imports of goods and services were the equivalent of over 90% of its GDP in 2016.

Since 2012, the country has continued to recover from the severe economic crisis that started in 2008. GDP growth averaged 3.8% for 2012-16, while GDP per capita reached nearly US$60,000 in 2016. Growth during this period was driven by tourism-related services, while the contribution to GDP from the traditional fishing, fish processing, and aluminum sectors declined.

Georgia commends Iceland’s efforts for the new incentives on investment development as well as the significant improvement in customs procedures by introducing several new projects.

Bilateral trade between Georgia and Iceland has been demonstrating increasing trends reflected in 21% growth in trade turnover in 2016 as compared to previous year. The main commodities imported from Iceland are frozen fish, fish fillet, caviar and others.

Trade relations being even more liberalized and developed under the Free Trade Agreement between Georgia and EFTA States which entered into force for Iceland and Georgia in September this year, providing a significant instrument with the potential to further strengthen economic ties and to promote more inclusive trade among the Parties.

In conclusion, we would like to underline that Iceland is valued partner of Georgia. We are convinced that the existing strong and amicable cooperation will be further strengthened.

We wish Iceland a successful review.
