Georgia’s candidacy elected to the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment for 2023-2026
On 20 October 2022, within the framework of the ninth meeting of the signatories of the Optional Protocol to the Convention against Torture (OPCAT), Georgia’s candidacy - Nika Kvaratskhelia was re-elected as a member of the Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture and Other Cruel, Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment for 2023-2026.
The Subcommittee on Prevention of Torture unites 25 independent experts and is responsible for supervising the implementation of the OPCAT.
Nika Kvaratskhelia has the 14-year experience of working in the area of prevention of torture. He has held the position of Head of the National Preventive Mechanism Department for already nine years. As an active member of the SPT (2019-2022), he worked as the Head of the SPT’s regional team for Asia and the Pacific and as a member of the SPT’s Working Group on Health Aspects of Prevention of Torture. He is also a member (expert) of the OMCT’s Covid-19 Crisis Action Group.
