Statement on behalf of the Group of Friends of the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture
Statement on behalf of the Group of Friends of the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture Delivered by Permanent Representative of Georgia to the United Nations Office and other international organizations in Geneva H.E. Mr. Alexander Maisuradze
"I have the honour to deliver this statement on behalf of the Group of Friends of the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture.
The Group of Friends is a cross-regional group of 16 States[1] created in 2019 with the aim of bringing visibility to the rehabilitation of victims of torture and supporting the Fund in rebuilding the lives of torture victims globally.
Every year, the UN Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture provides a crucial lifeline for many torture survivors and their families. Last year was difficult, especially for torture survivors. We were therefore pleased to note the Funds ability to adapt swiftly to the changing needs, including by providing 17 emergency grants linked to the impact of COVID-19.
The prospects for 2021 are equally challenging. We are therefore also pleased to note that in 2021 assistance is planned to reach over 47,000 people in 79 countries in all regions of the world.
This year also marks the 40th anniversary of the Fund. Commemorations will be launched on 26 June, the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture. Though it is sad that continued prevalence of torture continues to make the Fund relevant even after 40 years, the Group of Friend stands ready to use this occasion to promote the cause of the Fund.
Torture leaves long-lasting physical and psychological scars on survivors, their families and communities. The needs of torture survivors for rehabilitation and redress continues to outweigh the response.
We therefore encourage all States to consider contributing to the Fund and supporting the global efforts to assist victims of torture and their families.
Thank you. "
